The funeral for Mr.
Thornton, who died Monday of apparent heart failure at North Fulton Medical Center, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Cumming First Baptist Church. Ingram Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was associated with Dixie Boys Baseball for 35 years, often as Thornton Georgia state director. Mr.
Thornton got involved in youth baseball when his sons were playing the game in Norcross. In his career with the league, he spread Dixie Baseball programs to 11 districts from Ringgold to Savannah to Valdosta, said his son, Wayne Thornton of Marietta. Today, 30,000 to 40,000 boys ages 13 and 14 years old play on the program's 311 teams annually: "Some went pro because of the opportunities he gave them," his son said, noting 1997 Braves draft choice Rich Thieme, who played for the Dixie Boys South Gwinnett team. Competing against Southern teams from Texas to Virginia, Georgia teams have claimed the Dixie Boys Baseball World Series title in 1975, 1990, 1992,1995 and 1996. Mr.
Thornton's wife, Jean Shedd Thornton of Cumming, was an indispensable part of her husband's success. "He could not have done it without mother," his son said. "She was his administrator. She did the clerical work and wrote the letters." When Mr. Thornton recently became too weak to talk on the phone, Mrs.
Thornton relayed messages over the hospital phone to officials preparing for the state tournament that opens Friday in Valdosta. "Baseball gave Dad a reason to live," his son said. James Edward Thornton retired from General Electric, where he soldered intricate computer circuits at the company's former Chamblee plant. Mr. Thornton was a member of the Lafayette Masonic Lodge and the Yaarab Shrine Temple.
A Navy veteran, Mr. Thornton served aboard the USS Des Moines and USS Baltimore, and was a member of the USS Baltimore Sailors Association. Survivors other than his wife and son include two other sons, Mike Thornton and Mark Thornton, both of Cumming; his mother, Louise Webb of Memphis; two brothers, Howard Thornton of Memphis and Raymond Thornton of Augusta; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Pendley was a native Atlantan who had battled prostate and bone cancer valiantly for nine years. During WWII, Mr. Pendley was a member of the U.S. Navy Submarine Service and was based in Brisbane, Australia and in San Francisco, where he was a Staff Announcer and Jazz Show Host with the Armed Forces Radio.
He graduated from Atlanta's Boys High School and from the University of Georgia following his military service in 1948. Mr. Pendley was a Championship Tennis Player who lettered at UGA in Tennis and also as UGA's Starting Baseball Pitcher in 1942. At UGA he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. In more than 30 years in playing tennis he won over 200 State, Regional and National titles, including the 1980 USTA National 55 Clay Court Championships with partner, Gustavo Palafox and from age 45 to 65 was ranked at one time in every age division in singles and doubles in Georgia.
Mr. Pendley continued to play ALTA Tennis in Roswell at the Martin Landing River Club until last year. He is survived by his wife Barbara A. Pendley, Roswell; sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
John T. Wrigley (Elizabeth) of Alpharetta; daughter, Karin Pendley Koser and granddaughter, Carson Elizabeth Koser of Decatur; daughter, Pamela D. Miserocchi of Duluth and Diana K. Kirbo of Bainbridge; grandchildren, Amelia A. and Barret W.
Kirbo of Bainbridge; three nephews and a niece.
